Sports Psychology at SLU

I’m Dr. Michael Ross, I’m a
professor of psychology as well as the director of our sport psychological
sciences and consultation lab we’re very proud and pleased with our sport
psychological sciences and consultation lab because it really is based on
scientist-practitioner model which means that we offer both the science piece
doing the research piece as well as providing those consultation services we
do a lot to athletes in the community but primarily for our student-athletes
here at Saint Louis University and in doing so what we do is that we want to
find ways to maximize their overall performance of course there’s the
physical performance but there is also the mental aspects of participation and
competition particularly in any kinds of intercollegiate athletics so what we
will do is a lot of mental skills training with our student athletes in
order to get maximize their performance on the field and this is a comprehensive
approach sometimes it’s done individually sometimes it’s done in
groups we also offer biofeedback services which also provide them with
physiological measurements of what’s going on mentally while we’re training
them mentally they can actually see physiologically what’s happening for
example to get them in that peak flow state because if we can get them in that
flow state they are then able to perform at optimal levels and to be able to
maintain that which is particularly challenging because things go wrong you
make a mistake you make an error what we want to do is to train them to actually
be able to maintain that flow state when things are not going well when the
negative thoughts enter their mind when something goes wrong in a particular
game how to correct that mentally so that it doesn’t continue to affect their
performance. We have some players that do have anxiety issues in and around
performance in and around school different things and helping elite
athletes manage their emotions and anxiety and some some fears you know is
really important especially in big moments you know in big games important
games and certainly with some of the guys that’s been a real positive is just
helping them prepare and recognize how to control
things you know in those difficult moments.
