S. Korea wins 3rd straight EAFF E-1 title after defeating Japan 1-0

In sports… The South Korean men’s national football team
beat Japan 1-nil on home turf on Wednesday evening to capture their third straight East
Asian football title. Lee Seung-jae reports. With this year’s East Asian Football Federation
E-1 Football Championship taking place in Busan,… the host nation, South Korea took
on their long-time rivals Japan on Wednesday… knowing a victory would hand them the title. A goal in the 28th minute from Vancouver Whitecaps
midfielder Hwang In-beom and some scrappy defending was enough to shut out Japan and
take the match one-nil to capture the title. It was all the more sweet for South Korea
as it meant a number of firsts for the tournament. With the win,… the Taeguk Warriors became
the first host nation to win the E-1 title since the competition began in 2003. They were also the first team to not concede
a single goal throughout the tournament,… keeping cleansheets against Japan, Hong Kong,
and China. South Korea also became the first team to
win three consecutive E-1 titles,… and now hold the record for the most tournament wins
with five. Having also scored against Hong Kong,… Hwang
In-beom was named the tournament’s MVP. South Korea’s goalkeeper Kim Seung-kyu scooped
the top goalkeeping award,… and Kim Min-jae received the top defender award for keeping
South Korea’s opponents at bay for the entire tournament. Since the tournament isn’t on FIFA’s international
match calendar,… Europe-based clubs were not obliged to release their South Korean
players for the occasion so Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min and other big names were
not among the winning squad. Lee Seung-jae, Arirang News.
